The School
The School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) is foremost among the six Schools of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria. Established in 1982, as one of the pioneering Schools, it has programmes in agricultural and natural resources management.
The School fosters the exchange, dissemination and learning of basic and advanced technological knowledge and expertise, to meet the need for well-trained personnel in the private and public sector of the national economy. SAAT is situated within the University campus at Akure, in Ondo State which is an agrarian State and one of the major ‘Food Baskets’ of Nigeria.
The School which started with two Professors and nine other Lecturers now has 52 Professors and 111 other academic staff, 51 Administrative and Professional staff and 49 staff at the Teaching and Research Farm. At inception, there were 20 students, but currently, SAAT has an enrolment figure of 2382 undergraduates.
There are also postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctorate Degree students. The School has produced outstanding graduates from more than ten countries who now hold key positions throughout West Africa in general and Nigeria in particular. Some of the graduates have been absorbed into the School as Lecturers, and have become Professors.
The School has a Teaching and Research Farm set on an agricultural landscape. The University land along Akure/Owo Road is planned for commercial agriculture and forest plantation for teaching, research and industrial development of the University in the nearest future.
MISSION
Within the broad mission of the University, the academic programme of the School were specially packaged to:
- Provide education in the Science and Technology of Agriculture that will be functional and of academic excellence. Such education shall be at the sub-degree and higher degree levels.
- Provide continuing opportunities for Agriculturists – Foresters, Farm Management and Agricultural Extension experts, Fisheries and Wildlife, Crop, Livestock and Animal Health specialists – and related disciplines in their areas of expertise and to make such training relevant to national needs.
- Improve agricultural potentials of local farmers by providing: (i) Extension services that will bring the results of research to their use and benefit; (ii) Opportunities for visits by local farmers to teaching, research and commercial farms of the university for mutual and beneficial interaction; (iii) Relevant short-term training for those involved in production and management of farm products for the acquisition of techniques for improved production.

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (SEET)
The School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) was established in 1988, seven years after the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) came into existence. SEET is the fourth school to be established after the three foundational Schools of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), Earth and Mineral Science (SEMS) and pure and applied Science (SPAS) all of which were established in 1982.
When SEET was established, only three new departments were created namely Mechanical Engineering (MEE), Civil Engineering (CVE) and Electrical/Electronics engineering (EEE) while three others were pulled out of two existing school, Agricultural Engineering (AGE) was moved from SAAT to SEET while Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MM and Mining Engineering (MNE) were moved from SEMS to SEET. The School as at 1988 had six departments and academic activities commenced officially during 1989/1990 academic session.
SEET maintained the six Departments until the year 2016 when a new Department, Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) was established from MEE Department and also a new Department, Computer Engineering (CPE) was carved out from EEE Department. Also, slight changes of some departments took place in 2015. Agricultural Engineering changed tonAgricultural and Environmental Engineering while Civil Engineering changed to Civil and Environmental Engineering to meet the yearnings of society.
The main philosophy behind establishing SEET is to train Engineering graduates that will be self-reliant and foster industrialization of their immediate environment, create opportunities that will engender development.
The population of students has grown significantly as the quest for University education has soared considerably. From a population of 336 in 1989/90 academic session, students’ enrollment has increased to 2980 as shown Table I.
Similarly, staff population has increased to meet the minimum requirements for manpower training and development in Engineering and technology. From a population of 32 in 1989/90, staff population has increased to 250 as shown in table 2. The school has had a coordinating dean and six substantive Dean since inception in 1989. The names and tenure duration is as presented in Table III.

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY
VISION
To be a globally recognized School of Environmental Technology in need-driven research, training and sustainable management of the environment.
To promote inter-disciplinary research, service-based learning and innovative course content delivery towards solving environmental-related problems through the application of technology and promotion of sustainable built environment.

BACKGROUND
The School of Environmental Technology (SET) was established in 1989 with the admission of 27 pioneer students in the 1989/90 academic session under the foundation Dean, Prof. (Arc) E.A. Adeyemi (fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and first Professor of Architecture in Sub-Saharan Africa). At the inception of the School, there were 8 academic staff members and 4 academic Departments. These are Departments of Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Urban and Regional Planning.
As at today, the academic Departments have increased to 7 basic programmes commonly found globally in any well-established School or Faculty of Environmental Technology with the addition of Departments of Industrial Design, Surveying and Geo-informatics, and Building. These academic Departments run undergraduate (B.Tech), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), and graduate (M.Tech, and Ph.D) programmes. The population of postgraduate and graduate students has significantly increased to 797 while that of the undergraduate students is 2,606. The populations of the academic and non-academic staff are 105 and 59 respectively.
Since SET is an academic School in the University, the School appropriately adopted the Vision and Mission of the University. As the School works assiduously to achieve this Vision and Mission of the University, it has been ranked the BEST School of Environmental Technology in Nigeria by National University Commission.
The School, which equally houses the Department of Architecture, produced the BEST FEMALE ARCHITECT in the ARCON Professional qualifying examination in 2013 while its Department of Urban and Regional Planning was ranked the BEST Department of Urban and Regional Planning in Nigeria in 2012/2013 academic session by Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC). The Department is also a member of the Association of Africa Planning Schools (AAPSs).
The School of Environmental Technology is structured to promote an interdisciplinary approach to professional education and training in the basic disciplines of Environmental planning, Design, and Management.
Man’s environment is his biggest asset, which needs to be developed and managed in a sustainable manner. The totality of our environment is very crucial to the education and training programmes in our School.
Therefore, the primary aim of the programmes in the School is to identify the critical areas of environmental technology that promote orderly development of the human environment, and training of manpower with a view to achieving sustainable national development. The objectives of the School are to:
(a) provide education that ensures the attainment of professional skills requisite to effective shaping, re-ordering and articulation of the built environment;
(b) provide linkage between theory and practice through active participation in the practical aspects of the disciplines and providing continuing education to practitioners; and
(c) promote academic excellence and provide research opportunities appropriate to the development of national resources and technological skills in meeting emerging national demands.
Since its establishment, the administration of the School has continually enjoyed the support of the entire staff of the School. This is one of the factors that has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the School. The list of the past Deans and their duration of administration is as indicated below:

School Of Minerals And Earth Sciences
WELCOME TO SEMS
The School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS) was established in 1983 at the inception of the University. However, as a result of the re-organization of the Federal University of Technology (FUTs) in 1988, the SEMS academic programmes were broken up and relocated to School of Sciences (SOS), and School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET), thus bringing about the demise of a School (SEMS) that was intended by the Founding Fathers of FUTA to make significant impacts on earth sciences and its numerous applications and benefits.
Between 1988 and 2002, the University came to realize that one of the prime objects for which SEMS was originally established which was to make a strong positive impact on the nation’s mineral industry and on the application of climate information for sustainable development, has not been fully met. It is for this reason and the need to meet future challenges that in 2003, four of erstwhile SEMS academic departments were brought together under a new name: School of Mines and Earth Sciences (SMES). The four departments were: Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Meteorology and Mining Engineering.
In 2005 however, the Department of Mining Engineering relocated again to the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology for reasons of status in the accreditation of their programmes. This necessitated the re-christening of the School and the School reverted to its original name of School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS) with additional two new departments: Remote Sensing & GIS and Marine Science & Technology

School Of Management Technology
The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria, at its 167th Statutory Meeting, held on Wednesday, 25th May, 2005, considered the proposal for the establishment of a School of Management Technology (SMAT) in the University. Consequent upon the Senate approval, the School of Management Technology started as Department of Management Technology in the School of Sciences, with options in Project Management Technology and Transport Management Technology.
The first set of students were admitted in 2007, for the two options. In April, 2008, these options were approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) following a resource assessment visit from 9th to 15th December, 2007.
In January, 2010 the Department of Management Technology metamorphosed into the School of Management Technology, while its options (Project Management Technology and Transport Management Technology) became full-fledged Departments. In June, 2010, the two pioneering Departments in the School were given full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
In November, 2011, the Department of Entrepreneurship Management Technology was established, with approval after the NUC’s Verification visit of May, 2012. In October, 2015, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the establishment of three new Departments (Accounting, Business Administration and Economics) following the Resource Verification exercise that took place in September, 2015.
At present, the School of Management Technology has six Departments (Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Entrepreneurship Management Technology, Project Management Technology and Transport Management Technology). The School is regarded as the fastest growing School in the University. The vision is to make the School the best School of Management Technology in Nigeria.

School Of Sciences
The School of Sciences (SOS) is one of the schools established at the inception of the University in 1982. At that period, the name of the school was the School of Pure and Applied Science with only five (5) departments namely Biochemistry (BCH), Biology (BIO), Chemistry (CHE), Industrial Mathematics and Computer Technology (IMC) and Physics (PHY).
The School is the largest in the University. The School was fully adopted in 1988/89 academic session and at that time, the departments of Applied Geology & Applied Geophysics and Meteorology were domiciled in the School. An additional department in the School is the General Studies to complement the more specialized programmes in Science and Technology.
Presently, the School of Sciences consists of nine (8) departments namely: Biochemistry (BCH), Biology (BIO), Chemistry (CHE), Mathematical Science (MTS), General Studies (GNS), Microbiology (MCB), Physics (PHY) and Statistics (STA).
All the courses in the nine departments have been resource accredited. The departments of Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Meteorology had since been moved to the School of Mines and Earth Sciences (SMES) which is now called the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS).
The School is running a number of variegated academic programmes such as the Undergraduate (B.Tech), the Postgraduate (M.Tech and Ph.D) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD). Seminars are organized and presented by both students and academic staff to provoke a progressive academic achievement both in research and nation building.
The School organizes an Annual Lecture every year and to date she has had ten (10) Annual Lectures which were students and society oriented in this age of technology. Similarly, the School from 2012 started to organize Annual Conference and Alumni Homecoming events. Other schools have since followed suit.

School of Health & Health Technology
The School of Health and Health Technology was intended to start in the academic year 1984/85 with the admission of pre-clinical students, with the projection that the University will have all facilities available for clinical sciences by 1986/87 session.
The expansion of the academic frontiers in the Federal University of Technology, Akure led to the establishment of the School of Health and Health Technology (SHHT) in the year 2015, in fulfilment of the visions of the founding fathers of FUTA which will eventually lead to the establishment of a medical school with a teaching hospital as contained in the academic brief of FUTA at inception.
Specific Objectives
In keeping with the overall academic aims of the University, the School of Health and Health Technology will seek to:-
- Contribute to national development, self-reliance and unity through the advancement and propagation of knowledge in the field of Health, and Health Technology and using such knowledge for service to the community and humanity
- Train physicians, nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists and other professionals in the field allied to medicine in degree and non-degree programmes; with such training emphasizing team approach to health care delivery.
- Relate the training of all grades of health personnel both in aims and operations to national policies for health in order to provide comprehensive health care to the community for the promotion, maintenance, protection and restoration of health in rural and urban communities.
- Understand and apply sophisticated/advanced procedures and equipment with a view to adopting, designing and innovating existing and future procedures and equipment for the needs of the country taking into account our infrastructural facilities, culture, health care needs, economic status and climatic conditions.
- Promote a high standard of health care delivery within the catchment area.
- Offer training f a standard that would enable the graduates build upon his/her professional knowledge and skills.
