About Usman Dan Fodio University

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (formerly University of Sokoto) is one of the four Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September 1975 , at which time three University Colleges (now full-fledged Universities) were established.

The development of the university started on a temporary site (now called City Campus), situated along Sultan Abubakar Road, Sokoto. classes started in October 20th, 1977, with an initial enrolment of ninety-three undergraduate students for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education and Bachelor of Science; and an academic staff strength of thirty-three.

In January, 1978, one hundred and two students enrolled for a two-year pre-Degree Programme in the Humanities and Basics Sciences. With this modest start, the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto formally graduated a total of seventy-two students during its first convocation held in November 22nd, 1980.

Presently, there are Ten faculties and a postgraduate school in the University. The faculties are: Agriculture, Arts and Islamic Studies, College of Health Sciences, Education and Extention Services, Law, Management Sciences, pharmaceutical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. As the development programme is actively pursued, the following Faculties will be established: Food Sciences and Engineering.

The University statute established the Center for Islamic Studies in 1982. Its aim, among others, is to promote the study of and research in islam, Its instructions and related disciplines and its culture with special reference to the northern states of Nigeria. The Center runs a Diploma programme in Islamic Studies, which started in 1983, to assist in the manpower development of the locality and the country at large. the Center also runs Certificate Courses in Arabic and Islamic Studies.

In November 1982, the Sokoto Energy Reserach Center was established at the instance of the Federal Government. The Center was created not only to execute research in solar energy, but also to train and develop manpower in that area.

The posgraduate school of the University was established in 1983 for the training of graduates in variuos disciplines at the Masters and Doctorate degree levels. At the convocation ceremony held in December , 1986, the school produced its first PhD graduate in Chemistry.

The University moved most of its faculties and Service Departments to the main campus in 1982. Phase 1 of Students’ hostels had already been completed and occupied.

The City Campus now houses the Faculty of Veterinary Medcine, the college of Health Sciences, Center for Islamic studies, Cibiyar Nazarin Hausa, the department of Extention Services, a few services units and three Halls of Residence for students’ accomodation. The universioty Catering guest House, now named the University Guest Inn Limited, which runs on commercial basis, is located at mabera Layout.

Usman Dan Fodio University with the Nickname Danfodites was founded in the year 1975.

Furthermore, the university which was initially called the University of Sokoto has an Arabic Motto which translates as “Read”.

Admission Requirements To Study In UDUSOK

The following are the admission requirements to study at Usman Dan Fodio University.

Full-Time 100L Requirements Through UTME

The candidate must;

obtain a minimum of 5 credit passes In SSCE or its equivalent in not more than two sittings
obtain a score of 180 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board Exam For all programs.
make Usman Dan Fodio as First Choice/2nd choice of institution before being qualified to write UDOSOK post UTME.
have a considerable high average of UTME and Post UTME results to be qualified for admission.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(a) Postgraduate Diploma

The following may qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma admission:

Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or other recognized institutions.
Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) (not HD) with a minimum of Upper Credit pass or its equivalent in relevant areas.
In special cases, holders of HND with minimum of Upper Credit pass in non- related areas may be admitted after passing such tests as may be prescribed by the Departments/Faculties.
Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the University.
In addition to (i) – (iv) above, a candidate must satisfy the University’s minimum requirement(s) for matriculation i.e five (5) relevant O/L credits including English Language & Mathematics.

(b) Masters’ Degree (Academic and Professional)

The following may qualify for the Masters Degree admission:

Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or other recognized institutions who have obtained the approved degree of Bachelor with at least second-class division or its equivalent, or candidates with University degree and appropriate Postgraduate Diploma of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto or other recognized institutions with at least a credit level pass.
Candidates whose degrees are unclassified with average of “C” or 50% or above. Such candidates may be subjected to qualifying tests.
Candidates with only Bachelors degree in Third Class division and a relevant Postgraduate Diploma.
Candidates who hold qualifications other than the ones listed above, which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the University.
Candidates may be required to pass examination set by departments to which they are seeking admission to determine their suitability for postgraduate work.
In addition to (i) -(v) above, a candidate must satisfy the University’s requirements for matriculation i.e five (5) relevant O/L credits including English Language & Mathematics.

(c) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil./Ph.D)

The following may qualify for thMaster of Philosophy admission:

Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University or other recognized institutions who have obtained a Masters degree (Academic) with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on a 4-point scale or 3.50 on a 5-point scale.
Holders of a Masters degree in a cognate discipline with a GPA of 4 and above.
Candidates who hold qualifications other than the ones listed above, which are acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the University.
In addition to (i) – (iii) above, a candidate must satisfy the University’s minimum requirements for matriculation i.e five (5) relevant O/L credits including English Language & Mathematics.

(d) Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The following may qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy admission:

Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and other recognized institutions who have obtained good Masters Degree with a GPA of not less than 4.0 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale appropriate to the proposed areas of study.
Graduates of Usmanu Danfodiyo University and other recognized institutions who have obtained Masters of Philosophy degree appropriate to the proposed areas of study.
In addition to (i) and (ii) above candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Second Class lower division.
Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate School and Senate of the University.
In addition to (i) – (iv) above, a candidate must satisfy the University’s requirements for matriculation i.e five (5) relevant O/L credits including English Language & Mathematics.

Direct Entry

The candidate must;

obtain a minimum of 5 credit passes in SSCE or its equivalent in not more than two sittings to stand qualified.
obtain either an HSC, OND or NCE in the relevant program
have an acceptable score in the Direct entry screening exercise.
have an incredible performance when screening results and other factors are considered.
