UNICAL Postgraduate Admission Requirements.
Courses may be offered full-time or part-time. All programmes begin with coursework and end with a project for Graduate Diploma, MBA, MPA and MPAS or thesis for Master’s and Ph.D degrees.
- Duration of Programme: For full-time studies the Postgraduate Diploma lasts for two (2) semesters. The Master’s degrees last for 4 semesters; and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes last for 6 semesters.
For part-time programmes, the Master’s degrees last for 6 semesters, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) lasts for 10 semesters.
Note that PGD programmes run on full-time basis only. - Requirements for Admission: Candidates are required to have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale and 2.75 on a 4-point scale for Master’s programmes and 4.00 on a 5-point scale and 3.00 on a 4-point scale for the Ph.D programmes.
A CGPA of 1.50 and above is required for PGD programmes. Candidates with Master’s degree from recognized universities may credit the relevant courses towards the Ph.D programme, provided that the quality of the grade is acceptable to the Graduate School.

There will be no changes made after submission of application forms online. Therefore candidates must think through before submission as any change will attract a fee.
This is to prevent multiple applications. The titles Mr, Miss or Mrs may be used but not Rev(Dr), Chief, etc. Programmes applied for should be Ph.D, M.A, M.Ed, M.Sc, MPH, LLM, and PGD.
CONCEPT NOTE:
As part of the application, candidates are expected to submit a CONCEPT NOTE of 2 pages maximum for Ph.D programmes and one (1) page maximum for Master’s programmes.
The concept note will be typed online in a space provided in the form and printed out for submission to the department. The concept note is a MINI SUMMARY OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL highlighting what candidates intend to research on when admitted. It will have to cover the following:

Candidates for admission into M.Sc. (c) Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programme (i) Applicants for the M.Sc programme must have a good first degree in Agriculture or related science course. A minimum of second class lower with a CGPA of 3.00 is required on a 5-point scale or 2.75 on a 4-point scale. (ii) Applicants with less than 2.75 on a 4-point scale or 3.00 on a 5-point scale, but with a Post Graduate Diploma in Crop Science or related discipline with an average score of 60% or 3.00/5 cumulative average.
(d) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programme Students for the Ph.D programme must have a good Master of Science Degree (M.Sc) with an average score of at least 60% or minimum CGPA of 3.00/4 or 4.00/5 in Agriculture or related discipline.
Department of Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management
A. Postgraduate Diploma Programme with specialization in the following areas: (a) PGD in Forest Resources Management
(b) PGD in Wildlife Resources Management Entry Requirements (I) Five ‘O’ Level Credit Passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agric Science and any other Science Subject.
(II) B.Sc/B. Forestry and Wildlife degree of the University of Calabar in Relevant areas with no less than pass grade CGPA of 1.50 and above.
(III) HND with not less than a lower credit in Forestry and Wildlife, Agriculture, Fishery, Environmental Science, Botany, Zoology or related field of study from University of Calabar or any Institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar.

Entry Requirements (I) ‘O’ Level Requirements, same as in A (i) above (II) Graduate of University of Calabar or any Institution recognized by the University of Calabar Senate; with CGPA of not less than 3.0/5 or 2.75/4 point scale. Candidates with Bachelor’s Degree, with Third Class Honours from recognized Institutions and Upper Credit (60% average) at the PGD in a relevant field or candidates with HND at the Upper Credit, distinction level plus at least 60% at the PGD in a relevant field from a recognized Institution.

Department of Medical Laboratory Science The Department of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Calabar, offers admission for the 2017/2018 academic session into the Postgraduate Programme in the following areas: A. Medical Microbiology and Parasitology a) Doctor of Philosophy Admission Requirements The programme is open to candidates with M.Sc degree in Microbiology, Parasitology, Medical Laboratory Science, subject to a minimum CGPA of 4.00/5 or 3.00/4 and 3.50/5 or 2.75/4 for Masters/Ph.D holders of suitable B.Sc Honours degree will be admitted to the M.Sc in the first instance.

C. Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology (PGD) The prospective candidate must be a University graduate with CGPA of 1.50 and above. a) MBBCH or equivalent b) B.Sc (Hons) Degree in any Biology/Medical Laboratory Science with second class lower GPA not less than 2.4/4.
A. Chemical Pathology a) Doctor of PhilosophyAdmission Requirement The programme is open to candidates with M.Sc degree in Chemical Pathology, Biochemistry or Medical Laboratory Science. For holders of suitable Bachelor’s degrees, the admission will normally be to the M.Sc programme in the first instance advancement from M.Sc to Ph.D programme will be allowed on recommendation of the Departmental Graduate Committee to the Graduate School Board and after approval of the Senate. CGPA of 4.00/5 or 3.00/5 or 2.75/4 for Masters/Ph.D is required.

b) M.Sc in Chemical Pathology The programme is open to candidates with Bachelor’s Degree with first or second class honours in Physiology, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science. Candidates with professional qualification in Human Medicine (MBBS, BDS) or veterinary Medicine (DVM) are eligible. A CGPA or 2.75/4 or 3.00/5 is required.
c) Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Pathology Prospective candidates must be University graduate with the following minimum admission requirements. i) Holders of the MBBCH degree or equivalent qualifications
ii) Graduates of Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology and Haematology with at least Second class lower division. iii) Holders of FIMLT Diploma in Chemical Pathology iv) Holders of the AIMLT Diploma in Chemical Pathology with at least B average performance. v) Those who do not meet the above qualification, but have been actively involved in research may be considered for admission.
B. Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science a) Doctor of PhilosophyAdmission Requirements Candidates with good Master’s degree in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science from the University of Calabar with a minimum CGPA of 3.00/4 or 4.00/5 scale will be admitted. Persons with qualifications in related discipline (e.g. Immunology) may be accepted into the Ph.D programme. Such persons, however, will be required to take the M.Sc courses and obtain a minimum GPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale. i. Haemoglobins ii. Red Cell Enzymes iii. Haemostasis iv. Nutritional Anaemias v. Haematology Oncology vi. Immuno-Haematology
b) M.Sc in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science Admission Requirements Candidates for admission into the M.Sc programme shall be: i. Holders of BMLS or its equivalent ii. Holders of MBBCH or its equivalent iii. Holders of FMLSCN Diploma with dissertation in Haematology iv. Holders of PGD in Haematology
c) Postgraduate Diploma in Haematology (PGD) Admission Requirements The Postgraduate Diploma is designed for graduates whose degrees do not meet the entry requirements for the M.Sc degree work in the first instance or candidates who may not wish to do the required in-depth work. The programme would also provide good training for private practitioners wishing to upgrade their knowledge in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science. The candidates for admission into PGD programmes shall be: i. Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science with at least a CGPA of 1.50. ii. Holders of the MBBCH degree or its equivalent iii. Holders of AIMLSCN Diploma.
C. Histopathology M.Sc Programme Admission Requirements i. Prospective candidates are expected to have WASC/GCE with credit level passes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English
Language at not more than two (2) sittings, in addition to one of the following: ii. Holders of BMLS (Histopathology sub-major) or its equivalent with CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.00/5. iii. Holders of MBBCH or its equivalent in Histopathology iv. Holders of FMLSCN diploma by special examination or by dissertation in Histopathology v. Holders of PGD with CGPA of not less than 2.75/4 or 3.00/5. PGD Programme in Histopathology Admission Requirements i. Prospective candidates are expected to have WAEC/GCE Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit level passes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and English Language at not more than 2 sittings in addition to one of the following: ii. Graduate of Medical Laboratory Science and Anatomy with at least a second class lower division iii. Holders of the MBBCH degree or its equivalent iv. Holders of the AILSCN diploma v. Department of Nursing Science Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Nursing The Department offers courses leading to the award of Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.) in Nursing in the following areas of specialization: Community Health Nursing Maternal and Child Health Nursing and Women’s Health Nursing Administration and Management Medical- Surgical Nursing

Department of Arts Education 1. General Information: M.Ed and Ph.D programmes in Language Arts are offered on both full time and parttime bases in the department. They are research-based and therefore have the course work and thesis/dissertation components. The programmes are designed for teachers who have the interest to acquire more knowledge and skills for the teaching task performance as well as candidates aspiring to acquire knowledge, skills and pedagogies in Language Arts in order to fit into policy making roles, Language planning, Language Curriculum development, Literacy Material Development and Assessment in Language Arts. 2. a) M.Ed. in Language Arts The statutory O’level requirement of 5 credits including English and Literature in English and any other 3 relevant subjects is mandatory. Admission Requirements A) PGDHKE Candidates for the PGDHKE programme must have acquired: i. First degree (not less than 3rd class) in any course that is not related to Human Kinetics Education programme. ii. First degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education programme with a CGPA that is lower than entry requirements for the M.Ed
B) M.Ed Degree i. Candidates for the M.Ed degree shall have acquired first degree in Human Kinetics and Health Education of the University of Calabar or other recognized universities with at least one year post qualification experience in teaching or in an educational agency. ii. Candidates who have acquired first degree in Nursing Science or Environmental Education (Human Kinetics and Health Education option) from the University of Calabar or other recognized Universities with at least one year post-qualification experience. iii. Candidates with degree in disciplines other than the above who possess in addition, Postgraduate Diploma in Human Kinetics and Health Education (PGDHKE) or Advance Diploma in Sports Administration of Nigeria Institute for Sports (NIS): iv. Any other candidate whose qualification competence and experience for the proposed course of study have been approved by Senate.
C) The Ph.D Degree i. Admission to Ph.D programme in Human Kinetics and Health Education is open to all candidates who have earned M.Ed or its equivalent in Human Kinetics and Health Education of the University of Calabar or other approved universities. ii. Candidates who have earned Master’s degree in Public Health or any other relevant course from the University of Calabar or other recognized Universities. These categories of candidates who do not have Human Kinetics and Health Education background shall be made to pass through the M.Ed/Ph.D programme of the University of Calabar.
NB: GCE ordinary level papers or their equivalents required for admission into the first degree programme in this University shall equally be used in the determination of the suitability of each candidate for admission into these programmes.
Department of Science Education The following are the postgraduate programmes in the Department of Science Education: M. Sc.(Ed) and Ph.D in Mathematics Education, and M. Sc.(Ed) and Ph.D in Science Education (Biology or Chemistry or Physics) The entry requirements are as follows: Five (5) O’Level credits including English Language, Mathematics and the relevant science subjects CGPA of 3.00/5 or 2.75/4 for Masters and 3.50/5 or 2.75/4 for Ph. Department of Social Science Education
Admission Requirements On application, the following class of candidates are eligible for admission:
i) Holders of Bachelor of Social Science Education (B.Sc(Ed)) or its equivalents in either Political Science, Ecoomics, Geography or Social Studies from any University recognized by the University of Calabar Senate with a CGPA not below 3.00 on a 4-point scale or 4.00 on a 5-point scale. ii) Holders of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in any related area to those manage by the Department such as Political Science, Economics, Geography and Social Science studies inter alia with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 4-point scale or 4.00 on a 5-point scale. They, in addition must obtain a minimum teaching qualification of Postgraduate Diploa in Education (PGDE) from accredited tertiary institution or University of Calabar. iii) Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate with at least an upper credit level pass from accredited educational institution in any field of Political Science, Economics, Geography and Social Studies as well as other related disciplines. Such candidates in addition, bagged a Postgraduate Diploma in any of the units of Social Science Education from accredited tertiary institution.
Admission Requirement for Ph.D Degree in Social Studies Education i) A candidate for the Ph.D programme should normally have obtained a Master’s degree in Social Studies Education from University of Calabar or any other University recognized by Senate at a specified level of performance (at least 60% or B grade) in the course of examination for the Master’s Degree. ii) A candidate who holds qualification other than the above which are acceptable to Senate.

M.Sc Admission Requirement (a) Hold either a bachelor’s degree in accounting of the University of Calabar or from other Universities recognized by the Senate, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a five point grading system or 2.75 on a four point grading system.

Entry Requirements: a. MPA (CES) Admission requirements and credit load: i. Students admitted to the programme will be holders of good first degree from recognized universities. ii. Holders of degrees in discipline other than Public Administration would be required to take and pass three (3) 300 and 400 level courses in the Department of Public Administration. These courses will not count for credit toward MPA degree. iii. To qualify for the award of MPA degree, a candidate must successfully complete 30 credit hours of the 500 level courses.
b. MPAS (CES) Admission requirements and credit load: iv. Students admitted to the programme will be holders of good first degree from recognized universities. v. Holders of degrees in discipline other than Public Administration would be required to take and pass three (3) 300 and 400 level courses in the Department of Public Administration. However, Graduates in related disciplines especially in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Law, History and International Studies, Management Sciences or Philosophy may be accepted for direct admission into the M.Sc programmes, only if they poses CGPA of 4.00 on 5.00 point scale and 3.00 on 4.00 point scalee. M.Sc/Ph.D Public Administration Degree Candidates whose CGPA is between 2.75 and 2.99 for 4 point grading system and between 3.50 and 3.99 for 5 point grading system or less than 60% in the M.Sc programme may apply for the M.Sc/Ph.D.
f. Ph.D Public Administration Degree Graduate with higher degrees of the University of Calabar (i.e M.Sc) or their equivalents from other Universities are qualified for admission if the general requirements of the graduate school are met.

Department of Social Work Our programme is: 1. Postgraduate Diploma in Social Policy and Administration (PGDSPA)
Entry Requirements: In addition to the Graduate School general entry requirement, the programme is specifically designed for holders of Bachelor Degree and Higher National Diploma from other fields, but desire to pursue higher degree in Social Work and Sociology. It is an access route programme.

C. Post Doctoral Diploma (PGD) in Education Rationale: This course is intended to enthrone a proper culture of teaching and learning in the University. It is to bring out the best out of the teaching faculty in terms of mindset, attitude and skills, and in maximizing classroom achievements for the overall benefit of the University and the outside world.
Entry Requirements: i. A Ph.D in any of the fields of academic endeavour of the University of Calabar whose holder has no basic Qualification in Education. ii. A professor of the University of Calabar or an academic staff not below the rank of a senior lecturer or its equivalent.

Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Ecology, Toxicology and Pollution The programme is designed for professionals seeking a greater understanding of aquatic toxicology and pollution within the context of marine ecosystem; and for practitioners and agency personnel, including toxicologists, biologists, ecologists, hydrologists, chemists, environmental scientists, planners and regulators involved with water management issues, non-profit organizations, and policy makers. It also provides opportunity for career persons in biodiversity conservation to enrich their knowledge bank and encourage productive output.
Admission Requirements This PGD programme is open to holders of bachelor degree in any field with a graduating CGPA of not less than 1.5 on a 5 point grading system and 1.0 on a 4-point gradiang system. Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) of not less than a merit are also eligible.
C. Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture The Postgraduate Diploma in Aquaculture is designed to further equip aquaculture practitioners with the necessary tools for aquaculture practice. Fisheries extension officers and other field personnel in aquaculture related enterprise will benefit from the programme.
Admission Requirements/Eligibility Eligible candidates include B.Sc degree holders of Zoology, Biology, Agriculture, Fisheries or Aquaculture. Holders of Higher National Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture or relevant sciences who have two years of post-qualification experience are also eligible for admission.
