College Of Health Sciences

Welcome to the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the University of Abuja, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory
I am the third Provost of this noble and great medical School, referred to as the College of Health Sciences (CHS), of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja).

I had been the pioneer Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences as well as the pioneer Deputy Provost (2015-2016), before being elected and appointed Provost, January 26, 2016.

The CHS is sited centrally in Nigeria, at the Federal Capital Territory, within the University of Abuja that was established on January 1, 1988 as a dual-mode University with the mandate to run both conventional and long distance learning programes.

On the other hand, our noble CHS was established latterly in 2007, and it became the most national University College in Nigeria. I am very pleased to welcome you all to the CHS and its’ now functional website.

UniAbuja and the CHS were initially placed in what was tagged ‘Mini-Campus’, at a further southern precinct town called Gwagwalada, but has now moved 80% of its work- and student-force to the permanent site, which is placed nearer the International airport on the Shehu Musa Yaradua Way, occupying land size of 11, 800 hectares.

The current location of UniAbuja and part of the CHS, i.e., permanent site, are in a vibrant and easily-accessible suburb of the Nigerian Federal Capital, which offers conducive academic environment for students and scholars.

The CHS commenced academia with one Faculty, namely the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, with a subsequent addition of 2 more faculties, i.e., namely, the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences.

Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is primarily located at the permanent site, whilst the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, shares functions both at the permanent site as well as the Affiliate Teaching Hospital, located about 20minutes drive away in Gwagwalada, that is, the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

Finally, Faculty of Clinical Sciences is fully based at the Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.

The former President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, approved the use of Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital as the Teaching Hospital and directed that a special working relationship be developed with the National Hospital.

However, following our belief in the benefits of operating a Multi-Teaching Hospital Complex, the University of Abuja has begun the process of including other hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory in the Hospital Complex.

BRIEF HISTORY

At it’s of 27th October 2004, the Senate of the University of Abuja approved the creation of four new academic programmes, which included the CHS.

The founding/pioneer Provost was Professor J.A.M. Otubu, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who made a proposal for the creation of CHS, whilst being Dean of Faculty on 1st October, 2005.

He was pioneer Provost from 2007 to 2010, and thereafter, Professor S.A. Asala acted in that capacity until being elected and appointed as substantive Provost, August 2014 – January 27, 2016.

COLLEGE STATUTES

A College Statutes 2007, established by virtue of section of the University of Abuja Act 1992 was evolved. This has been approved by the Senate and Council of the University of Abuja and had undergone one reading, but yet to be finalised in view of political changes in government. We are actively pursuing the completion of these Statutes with its passage into law, hopefully before the 2nd quarter of 2016.

COMMUNITY PRACTICE

The College had located a Primary Health Center at Dobi in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory. The University of Abuja has now completed all stages of negotiation with the Council authority, and this PHC, Dobi has been given to the University for the training of our students. Great thanks must be given to Hon. Zakari Angulu Dobi of Dobi for the gracious release of the said PHC to us.

OUR VISION AS A COLLEGE

The CHS was established to provide an array of national, regional and international opportunities for higher education in medicine, focused and applied research – in an environment that fosters problem-based learning, discovery, creativity, and community engagement, and all in line with its Vision.

Frankly speaking, CHS’s Vision is to become a model National Unity Medical School, excelling in medical education and research.

Tuition and research is of an internationally benchmarked standard at CHS, where students are exposed to strategic teaching methodologies, innovative programme design and intensive research.

At CHS, we are committed to developing young men and women for careers in medicine, science, and preparing them as future leaders, captains of the medical sector and tourism, researchers and innovators to meet the needs of an ever-changing world and the challenges time ahead.

My personal vision and passion for our noble CHS remains in concert with its own vision and peculiar logo of Solum Optimum (Only the Best), as I want to serve as to be a catalyst for the transformation of CHS into a model College of global standards; as to achieve an accolade of being one of the BEST in Nigeria and rest of Africa; and becoming one of top 200 in the world by 2020.

MISSION

This vision of mine can be achieved with the use of the following strategy and methodology:
To impart a culture of EXCELLENCE in the quality of training at all levels by;
Building the capacity of EDUCATORS to be along 21st century lines;
Improving facilities & infrastructure;
Blending learning approaches; and
Ensure CHS serves & engages society to enhance economic, social, and cultural well-being.

List Of Courses Offered At The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) | Faculty of Engineering

On behalf of staff and students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Abuja, I would like to welcome you all to the Faculty of Engineering

BRIEF HISTORY

The Senate of the University at its 92nd regular meeting held on 27th October, 2004 approved the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering with effect from the 2005/2006 academic session.

The academic activities commenced with initial intake of eight (8) and nine (9) undergraduate (100-level) students into the Departments of Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering respectively in that session.

The Departments of Chemical and Electrical Engineering commenced academic activities in the 2006/2007 session. Due to poor facilities then, the four (4) programmes failed both the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and COREN Accreditations, which led to the stoppage of admission into these programmes.

Hence, with effect from 2010/2011 session no candidate was admitted into any of the four (4) programmes. Subsequently, the Senate farmed out 300 and 400 level students of the Faculty to various Universities.

The 500 level students were sent to the Federal University of Technology(FUT), Minna for one year intensive training. They returned and had their results approved by the Senate.

Accreditation Status

Following the Resource Verification by the NUC in November, 2012, approval was granted by the NUC to establish Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Programmes without prejudice to the existing students.

The Faculty then admitted eighty (80) fresh students to the four (4) approved Programmes for the 2014/2015 Session.

The NUC Accreditation visit of November, 2014 yielded Interim Accreditation for the four (4) Departments and that of COREN in March 2015 gave full accreditation to Departments of Chemical and Civil Engineering and interim accreditation to Electrical/Electronics and Mechanical Engineering Departments.

This was due to tremendous work done to address the issues and challenges that led to the failed accreditation previously.

Present Condition of Faculty

Manpower Development:

The Faculty has recruited more Academic Staff in various fields of specialization as full time staff, visiting or on pro bono basis. A great number of Faculty staff have either acquired their PhDs or are in the process of acquiring it.

More recruitment is envisaged with increased student enrolment.

Library

There is now a Faculty based Library which stock current and up to date materials (books, journals, periodicals etc.) aside the Main University Library. There is also an e-library facility.

Laboratories

The Faculty has been able to create more space and also procured and installed Laboratory equipment for students’ practicals and research for the four (4) Programmes. The equipment are very new and modern.

Workshop

The Faculty now has a Central Workshop which services the four (4) Programmes. The workshop has the machining/fitting shop and the welding/fabrication shop among others.

Staff Office Accommodation

Staffs are being accommodated in the first wing of the Engineering Complex. The second wing is under construction and when completed will accommodate more staff, classrooms, lecture theatre and other ancillaries.

Students

A total of one hundred and twenty (120) students were admitted in the 2014/2015 session and one hundred and sixty (160) in the current 2015/2016 session.

Computer Room

The Faculty has a dedicated Computer Room/Laboratory.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The University is strategically located (in the country’s capital). In line with this, the Faculty has signed MoUs with a number of related Organizations, Government Agencies and Companies; these include NARSDA, ECN, NASENI, AFIT (Kaduna) etc.

VISION AND CHALLENGES

Linkages

To enhance exposure and improve the capacity of staff and students, the Faculty will like to enter into fruitful linkages with other reputable Institutions and Industries, including those abroad.

We look forward to linkages that can result into staff exchanges, sponsorship to International Conferences, procurement of current and reputable academic journals, books, softwares, etc. Linkages that give opportunities to workshops and staff trainings will be appreciated.

Structures

The second wing of the Faculty Complex presently under construction was donated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The Faculty is still very much open for more of such donations.

This is in view of the Faculty vision to establish more programmes in the near future.

Laboratory and Workshop Equipment

Though the University had recently procured new equipment, the Faculty is still open to more. Equipment in the four (4) Departments and in envisaged new programmes is solicited.

Postgraduate studies

Presently, academic staff of the Faculty are admitted for Postgraduate Studies in other Universities. The Faculty has a plan to introduce Postgraduate Studies in the four (4) Departments.

The proposal for this has been approved by the University Senate. We are hoping to commence admission before the end of 2016.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

BRIEF HISTORY

The decision to establish the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Abuja, was taken by the Senate on 27th October, 2004. However, the Faculty did not formally take off until January 2007, with an initial student population of 18.

The University of Abuja is situated in the Guinea Savannah zone of Nigeria where there is vast grazing land for livestock production all year round. This has attracted many pastoralists to settle and graze their animals in the zone.

A variety of animal species is available in the Federal Capital Territory and the surrounding states such as Niger, Nassarawa, Kogi, Southern parts of Kaduna and Plateau States.

These include, the equine, bovine, caprine, ovine, canine and avian. The availability of these species provide opportunities for teaching, research and Veterinary practice.

Prior to the establishment of the Faculty, Federal Capital Territory did not have Veterinary Institutions. The closest Veterinary Faculty to the Federal Capital Territory is at least 200 kilometres away.

The inhabitants of the Federal Capital Territory and its environs are therefore benefitting immensely from the establishment of a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in the University of Abuja.

VISION

The vision of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Abuja is to produce well trained and highly motivated Veterinary graduates who will be well equipped to embark on successful careers in Veterinary practice, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, livestock industry, academia and biomedical research.

MISSION

The mission of the Veterinary programme is to achieve and sustain high national and international standards in teaching and learning and to promote excellence through:

  1. Provision of broad and balanced foundation courses in Veterinary Medicine with maximum practical exposure.

  2. Inculcate in the students the ability to apply biomedical knowledge and skills to solve clinical problems, prevent and control diseases, engage in livestock, small animal and aquatic animal production and to solve problems related to animal production system and the environment.

  3. Inculcate in the students a range of transferable skills of value in clinical and non-clinical employment.

  4. Provide the students with knowledge and skills from which they can pursue further studies in specialized areas of Veterinary Medicine and in multidisciplinary areas.

  5. Ultimately produce many job creators and not job seekers in the country and the world at large.

The Faculty is located at the Main Campus along the Airport Road.

There are presently eleven (11) Departments with a Veterinary Teaching Hospital for the clinical training of students and a referral centre for animal owners and private Veterinarians.
