The West African Examination Council, WAEC has released the online and offline process and guidelines involved in the collection of candidates Original Certificates for School candidates and Private Candidates Nationwide.
The West African Examination Council, WAEC are the body involved in conducting the Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in African Countries.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is the minimum educational qualification requirement in Nigeria and some other West African countries.
The body currently conducts two types of examination three times annually they include:
1. First Diet (Private) — January/February
2. Second Diet (School) — May/June
3. Third Diet (Private) — November/December
At the end of the above examinations the body issues certificates to candidates, normally they are ready 90 Days after the release of the results. (It takes 90 days for WAEC Certificates or Original Result to be made available after the release of results. Kindly note that beginning with WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2020-Second Series, certificates are to be printed on request made online via https://certrequest.waec.ng).
Recently the examination body WAEC started imposing penalties on candidates who fail to process the collection of their certificates within a year after it had been released.
From the Statics / Reports they gave it shows that there are still results of candidates who wrote the examination as far back as 1960 in their office, according to examination body. People only turn up to collect theirs when they are in dire need of it.
So in-order to curb this bad practice they has started the imposing of penalties all certificates still in their Custody after One Year.

A. WAEC Original Certificates Collection Process for School Candidates (May/June) | OFFLINE ONLY.
Candidates or Students who sat for the Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at their various schools are called School candidates and can get or collect their Original Certificates from the School Authorities as it will have been dispatched to them after 6 months of the release of results.
NOTE: Your school are free to charge you any amount of money pending on how long the certificate has been in their custody, so please do not complain….
WAEC Original Certificates Collection Process for Private Candidates (GCE) | ONLINE & OFFLINE.
Candidates or Students who sat for the Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at various EXTERNAL CENTERS are called Private candidates and can get or collect their Original Certificates only from any WAEC Offices in that particular state they wrote the examination or Online by following the guidelines below:
NOTE: You can’t write your Private Examination in Anambra State and expect to collect your certificate in any WAEC Office in Abuja.
How to Request Original WAEC Certificate/Result Online at certrequest.waec.ng
The West African Examinations Council, WAEC has introduced an electronic certificate management system, a portal deployed to enable private candidates to request for certificates online.
Collection of certificates by private candidates will be based on online requests by such candidates via the platform.
In order for this to be done seamlessly, WAEC have partnership with the Nigeria Postal Service, NIPOST to use the expedited mail delivery service of NIPOST.
Candidates upon application and required payments done online, have their certificates delivered to them in any state of the federation, irrespective of where they sat for the examination..
WAEC Certificate Request Portal (certrequest.waec.ng):
Private candidates can now make request for their certificates. Requested certificate would be delivered to any WAEC office of choice. Candidate would be required to provide valid means of identification at the designated pick-up location (WAEC office).
According to WAEC,The Electronic Certificate Management System (e-CertMan) is an online portal designed to automate the process of issuance of certificates based on requests by individuals who sat WASSCE for Private Candidates. From the point of application through to the pickup stage, candidates would be able to track the stages of their certificate requisition.
The new process is a departure from the old arrangement whereby candidates must collect their certificates from the Zonal/Branch offices where they wrote their examination. Candidates can now collect their certificates from any of their preferred pick-up locations (WAEC Offices) across the country. However, they would be required to provide valid means of identification such as a National Identity Card, Drivers License and International Passport at the designated pick-up locations.
Payment for the service and status information would all be handled through the portal. Candidates can request for their certificates up to WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2020 – Second Series and after.
Applications can be made online via https://certrequest.waec.ng.

Hence, follow the step below to print your Certificate in colour
- Visit https://certrequest.waec.ng
- Click on the Certificate Request Tab
- Select Examination Diet i.e Private Candidates First Series or Private Candidates Second Series
- Select Examination Year i.e 2019, 2020
- Enter your WAEC Examination Number (Your 10 digit Examination Number (Centre Number plus your 3 digits Candidate No)
- Click on the Continue Button to ascertain availability of your certificate and make payment online for the service or print out the payment slip and visit any bank for offline payment.
- After payment, Wait for your Original WAEC Certificate to be processed and delivered to your preferred WAEC Office in your area or locality ten working days after confirmation of Payment..

- Click on the Check Status Tab
- Enter your WAEC Examination Number (Your 10 digit Examination Number (Centre Number plus your 3 digits Candidate No)
- Enter Payment Refrence Number in the box provided

How do I check my WAEC Certificate status?
- Click on ‘Check Status’ on the portal. Enter the Reference Number on your Invoice.
How do I pay for my WAEC Certificate?
There are three payment options available on the portal:
- Bank In-Branch
- USSD
- Card Payment
For Bank In-Branch, take the Printed Invoice to any bank branches for Payment.
For USSD, make payment by entering the USSD code that corresponds with the bank account you wish to debit. Once it is successful, your Invoice would be sent to the e-mail address supplied when making requisition for the Certificate.
For Card Payment, select Card Payment Option, enter all card parameters, once it is successful, the system generates an Invoice for the Payment.
How do I collect my Certificate?
- Visit the preferred pick-up Location selected when making requisition to collect your Certificate.
NB: The Certificate would be made available ten working days after confirmation of Payment.

A. BY SELF
The Below documents are required from you while visiting the WAEC Offices for the Process of your Original Certificates.
✓ Sworn affidavit
✓ Online result print-out
✓ One passport-size photograph
✓ Photo card
✓ Identity card
B. BY PROXY
Requirements for Collection of Certificates by Proxy:
A. Fax the following documents to the DR/Zonal Coordinator, WAEC, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria through your proxy:
1. International Passport Page of the Candidate;
2. Visa Page and Residential Permit of the Candidate;
3. Application Letter from the Candidate:
i. Address these two letters to the DR/Zonal Coordinator, WAEC, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria;
ii. Include your phone number(s), the email address in the letters & the examination particulars.
4. Authority Letter from the Candidate.
B. Requirements from the Proxy:
1. Identity Card of the Proxy authorized to collect the Certificate
2. N3,550.00 cash payable to WAEC cashier, Ikeja, Lagos.
WAEC Original Certificates Penalty Fee
WAEC now charges each candidate what they ‘Custody Fee’ and its rate varies depending on how long your certificate has been in WAEC’s care. The said fee payable depending on how long your certificates were issued.
Each time you delay the processing and collection of your certificate, the amount of money you’d pay increases. So, the earlier you go and get your WAEC certificate, the better.

Kindly note that after been issued your Original WAEC Certificate you are to ensure the safety of the certificate as the examination body doesn’t issue the certificates twice.
