Dressing Guidelines for Students
PREAMBLE
The principles of Christian dressing are strictly enforced in Anchor University since it is a faith-based University.
First, Christian dressing must be natural. All dressing styles that destroy nature like putting on clothing that resemble that of opposite sexes, perming or denaturing the hair are all forbidden. Second, Christian dressing must be modest and not in the extremes to the point of distracting attention of people. Good dressing adds values to a person’s personality and it gives a sense of self-confidence and self-worth. Third, it must cover nakedness properly and should not be a source of temptation to opposite sexes. Fourth, it must be dignifying.
Proper dressing is one of the unique aspects of Anchor University culture and core values that students must imbibe to make their academic pursuit a pleasurable one. For the purpose of clarity, these guidelines are hereby presented under male and female students respectively.
1.1 MALE STUDENTS
1.1.1 All male students are expected to dress corporately to the Lecture Halls, Examination Halls and special ceremonies, such as Sunday Worship Service, Matriculation, Convocation, Public Lectures and other events specifically so stated. To be corporately dressed connotes a shirt and necktie, a pair of trousers, with or without a jacket and a pair of covered shoes.
1.1.2 For National Days such as Independence Day, national dressing code may be observed.
1.1.3 Any shirt with unholy inscriptions and other forms of indecent words or any sign with hidden meaning is strictly outlawed anywhere on the campus as it would be taken as cultism.
1.1.4 Band-less trousers must never be worn without suspenders.
1.1.5 Folding, holding and pocketing of tie along the road, lecture halls, Chapel assemblies, etc., is strictly prohibited in the University.
1.1.6 Wearing of a tie with canvas is not corporate. Therefore, such an act is not allowed in the University environment.
1.1.7 Jerry Curls and treated hair are strictly prohibited.
1.1.8 No male student is allowed to wear scarves, braided hair, painted fingernails, long nails, necklace, rings, wristband of any kind, earrings and ankle chains in the University. For the avoidance of doubt, only conventional wrist watches are allowed.
1.1.9 Wearing of long-sleeve shirts without buttoning the sleeves is not allowed.
1.1.10 Shirt collars should not be left flying and shirts must be properly tucked into the trousers.
1.1.11 The practice of pulling down trousers to the hip line (‘sagging’) is prohibited.
1.1.12 Students are advised to have even and well-cut hair that is combed regularly. Afro-looking hair styles and other special styles are strictly prohibited. All male students are also expected to be clean-shaven, as keeping of beards is prohibited. Hair scrapping is forbidden for all students.
1.1.13 Male students may wear French suits.
1.1.14 The use of face caps in the Lecture Halls, Examination Halls and University Chapel is strictly prohibited, except for sports and other related events.
1.1.15 Piercing of and tattooing on any part of the body are strictly prohibited. Any of such done before admission into the University shall be declared during the first registration in the first year. Failure to do so will attract requisite penalty.
1.1.16 Wearing of bathroom slippers should be restricted to the hostels. No student should wear any form of slippers to the University Chapel.
1.1.17. The possession and, or wearing of Jeans or any jeans-like materials of any kind is strictly prohibited in the University environment.
1.2 FEMALE STUDENTS
1.2.1 All female students are expected to dress corporately to the Lecture Halls, Examination Halls and Special Ceremonies, such as Sunday Worship Service, Matriculation, Convocation, Public Lectures and other events specifically so stated. To be corporately dressed connotes a decent skirt suit, skirt and blouse and decent gowns with a pair of low-heel covered shoes.
1.2.2 All dress and skirt hems must be well below the knees to cover their nakedness even when seated.
1.2.3 Female students may wear National or foreign wears (decently sewed) provided it is decently worn within the campus outside normal Lectures, Public Lectures, Special Ceremonies, Matriculation, Convocation and Examinations.
1.2.4 The wearing of sleeveless dresses, baby sleeves, spaghetti straps and Camisoles without a jacket is strictly prohibited in the lecture rooms and in the University environment.
1.2.5 Blouse, which may be worn with a waist coat or armless sweater has to be properly tucked into the skirt. It should never be left flying under the waist coat/armless sweater. The waist coat/armless sweater must at least rest on the hip. “Bust coats”, terminating just below the bust line, are not corporate hence are not allowed.
1.2.6 Jersey material tops, having cotton collars are not allowed for normal Lectures, Public Lectures, Special Ceremonies, Matriculation, Convocation and Examinations. They are regarded as casual wears.
1.2.7 Skirts could be straight, flared or pleated. Skirts with uneven edges are not allowed. PENCIL SKIRTS ARE ALSO NOT ALLOWED. None should be tight or body hugging.
1.2.8 The wearing of dropping shawls or scarves over dresses or dresses with very tiny singlet-like straps (spaghetti strap) is strictly prohibited in the Lecture and Examination Halls and in the University environment.
1.2.9 The wearing of strapless blouses or short blouses that do not cover the hip line is strictly prohibited in the Lecture and Examination Halls and in the University environment.
1.2.10 The wearing of clinging clothing, including body hugs and any clothing made from stretchy, elastic material is strictly prohibited in the Lecture and Examination Halls and in the University environment.
1.2.11 The wearing of revealing skirts and blouses, especially low-cut blouses and the type of blouses that do not cover the navel is strictly prohibited in the Lecture and Examination Halls and in the University environment.
1.2.12 The wearing of transparent dresses is strictly prohibited in the Lecture and Examination Halls and in the University environment.
1.2.13 The use of face-caps in the Lecture Rooms, Examination Halls, University Chapel and in the University environment is strictly prohibited except during sporting activities.
1.2.14 The wearing of bathroom slippers is not allowed beyond the hostel.
1.2.15 Female students are advised to wear simple hairstyles that are moderate and neat that characterize a decent, responsible and cheerful University student. In addition, use of hand dryer should be restricted to the hairdressing salon.
1.2.16 Coloured hair, jerry curls, perming, make-up and keeping of long fingernails or artificial nails are prohibited within the University environment. Unnatural hair styles and use of attachment are strictly prohibited in the University.
1.2.17 All kinds of jewellery such as but not limited to chains, necklaces, bangles, earrings, finger rings, nose rings are prohibited in the University.
1.2.18 The possession and, or wearing of Jeans or any jeans-like materials of any kind is strictly prohibited in the University environment.
1.2.19 Female students can wear low sandals or covered corporate shoes. High-heel shoes are forbidden.
1.2.20 Tennis shoes or sneakers may only be worn during sporting events and with casual wears.
1.2.21 Piercing of and tattooing on any part of the body are strictly prohibited. Any of such done before admission into the University shall be declared during the first registration in the first year. Failure to do so will attract requisite penalty.
1.2.22 All female students must cover their head during prayers and church services.
1.2.23 Skirts must be worn with slips underneath. Slit skirts are prohibited.
1.2.24 Wearing of Stiletto and ‘platform’ shoes as well as clothing that do not conform to the prescribed dress code is strictly prohibited within the University environment and will be confiscated.
1.2.25 Wearing of boob tubes is prohibited. The entire body must be covered. No part of the chest should be revealed.
1.2.26 Wearing of tops, shorts or T-Shirts with unholy inscriptions such as sex, bitch and other forms of indecent words are not allowed anywhere in Anchor University.
1.2.27 For sporting activities, sport wears should be feminine and neither expose nakedness nor body contour in any way. For the avoidance of doubt, feminine sport wears means customised skirt and top.
6.3 PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINES
If any Uniform Dress Code is prescribed for female and male students in any Faculty/Department of the University, particularly those in the professional disciplines, all students affected must adhere very strictly to the Uniform Dress Code.
The University Administration will consider any violation of it as a very serious offence and severe disciplinary action will be taken against the defaulters, which may include a written warning, suspension or expulsion.
6.4 PENALTIES FOR IMPROPER DRESSING
a. Erring students shall be sent out of the Lecture Room/Hall, Examination Halls or back from the University area where such is not allowed at the time.
b. A warning letter shall be issued to the erring student and a copy of the letter shall be filed in his/her personal file in the University and Department.
c. The parents/guardians of the erring student may be informed in writing, accordingly.
d. The student shall be suspended from the University if unrepentant, subject to (a), (b) and (c) above. A student is considered unrepentant of the bad dressing habit if he or she has been warned of the offence up to at least two times.
e. Repeated case after two warnings or 4 weeks suspension shall attract suspension for one session or outright expulsion as the case may be.
