Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola prides itself on providing a calm university environment that is rich in experience and has continued to attract a large number of applicants within Nigeria and neighboring countries who annually seek admission into its academic programs.

Brief History of the University
The Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola was formally known the Federal University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa state Nigeria was established in 1981 by the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide the much needed technologically skilled manpower for the nation.
It is one of the Federal Universities recognized by National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctorate degrees in different fields of Science and Technology.
The University’s first set of 108 students graduated in the 1988/89 academics session. The University was merged to the University of Maiduguri in 1984, when it became the Modibbo Adama Campus (MACUM), of the University of Maiduguri.
However, in 1988, it was de-merged and granted full autonomy with the name reverted to the Federal University of Technology, Yola. In 2011, the then President and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR approved the change of the University’s name to Modibbo Adama University of Technology, (MAUTECH) Yola, effective from 1st October 2011.
With students’ population of over twenty thousand, the University runs undergraduate and postgraduate programs in seven schools namely: School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT); School of Environmental Science (SES); School of Management and Information Technology (SMIT); School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS); School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET); School of Technology and Science Education (STSE) and School of Postgraduates Studies(SPGS).
In addition to conventional full-time programs, the University runs Degree programs through its Distance Learning and Centres. Its Consultancy Services Unit also runs Diploma and Certificates in over twenty programs.
Teaching and Research in Science and Technology have been the main thrust of the University. These have been attracting to the University series of collaboration and partnership with foreign Universities, Corporate bodies, Government and non-Governmental Organizations. Six distinguished professors have successfully steered the affairs of the University as Vice-Chancellors from its inception.

School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology
The School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology is one of the School of the University. It was established in 1989 and became fully functional in 1990. now has eight departments that award Bachelor of Technology Degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension, Animal Science and Range Management, Crop Production and Horticulture, Crop Protection, Fisheries, Food Science and Technology, Forestry and Wildlife Management and Soil Science. In the eight academic departments, there are 84 academic staff in the following cadre.

Achievements
The School has grown since inception in 1989 to date to a centre of excellence in Agriculture and Food Security. The School is now housed in Usman Bayero Nafada Centre of Agriculture and Food Security building.
The School complex has four blocks that house two departments each. In addition, there is a Dean’s Office block with six offices and the School Library.
All the eight departments run Postgraduate programs Vis: Postgraduate diploma, Masters of Technology, Master of Science and Master of Philosophy.
The School also collaborates with the West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) in the area of seed multiplication, Fishery Production, Poultry Production, Agriculture, Postharvest and Technology Dissemination. Recently WAAPP Office in Abuja denoted a brand new Toyota Hilux to the School for the WAAPP activities at the University.
Challenges and Constraints
The School of Agriculture moved to its permanent site in March 2013. The movement was, however, in phases which finally completed in January 2014.
The Challenges and constraints of the School is how to put the vast space into full use. The eight departments in School have 24 classrooms, out of which only six are now furnished and put to use.
Out of the 16 laboratories that cut across the eight departments known, is furnished and put to use. In addition, there are eight seminar rooms which are yet to be furnished.
Also, eight departmental board rooms and eight computer studios are yet to be furnished.
The water supply to the complex is yet to be commissioned even though there is a borehole with overhead tank erected.
The drainage system and landscaping needs to be provided to beautify the complex.
There is need also to provide the complex with solar security light to provide lighting in the night. Other challenges and constraints of the complex is bid of packing space for the staff.
There is a need to provide befitting packing space for the complex.
While some departments are top-heavy others are bottom-heavy. In addition, departments such as Fisheries and Food Science have seven and five academic staff respectively.
There is a need to recruit nine staff in these two departments. There is a need to also to recruit graduate assistants to be trained in specific areas in those departments that are top-heavy such us Agricultural Economics and Extension, Crop Production and Horticulture and Forestry and Wildlife Management.
School of Engineering and Engineering Technology
The School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) was formally established in October 1990 with an initial intake of 60 students at the 200 level. Since then the student intake and enrolment have grown rapidly with the student intake for the current session, 2014/2015 put at about 1,184. The NUC Accreditation for all the programs in the School had expired by 2010 and presently, we are preparing to re-accredit our entire program this year (2015). Similarly, the Department of Chemical, Electrical and Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering had its COREN Accreditation expired by 2015, and are preparing to re-accredited their programs too. While the Agricultural and Environmental and Civil Engineering Department’s COREN Accreditation will expire by 2017.Philosophy and Objectives.
The School of Engineering and Engineering Technology was established in October 1990 with an initial intake of sixty students at the 200 level. The students were in two main groups, those from 100 level science programs of the University and the direct entry candidates who made up about 35% of that student’s population. There are also a significant number of foreign students enrolled in the School. Research interests of academic staff cover diverse fields of corrosion, solar energy utilization transport phenomena. Local raw materials utilized for construction/climate design of building highway, surface failure, structural uses of timber, electrical power transmission and distribution, control of electrical machines, power systems protection, drainage irrigation erosion control, and water supply technology. The overall philosophy of the School is to produce graduates with a sound academic background coupled with good practical training. The graduates will actively contribute to the achievement of the nation’s goal of industrial development. They would be trained to be self-reliant, creative, imaginative and resourceful in the application of their skills to solve technical problems3. Academic Programmes

School of Environmental Sciences
The School of Environmental Sciences was established in October 1988 with Professor G.G.R. Thambyapillay as its first Dean. The Department of Geography was the first to take-off with six academic staff and thirty-five students.
During the 1989/90 Academic Session, the Departments of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) and Geology formally took off and a year later the Department of Surveying was established.
The student population in the school rose to 2,100. Subsequently, the Departments of Architecture, Industrial Design and Building were established in 1997, brings the number of Departments in the School to six. At present, the School has a total of 97 academic staff and 2,100 Undergraduate and 189 Postgraduate students.
The School plans to establish new programs in Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Meteorology shortly.
- PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
The six departments in the School are closely related and collectively focused on the science of understanding, ordering, managing and monitoring the physical and human environments.
However, within this broad structure, each department is specializing in one major area of the science of the environment in order to provide a detailed theoretical and practical spatial/temporal perspective that would help achieve harmonious and sustainable development. Indeed we work towards achieving a sustainable environment.
The basic thrust of the school is to develop an integrated network of teaching and research frameworks that would produce well trained and competent graduates capable of directing and managing the complex processes of development and change, in the natural and human environments.
To achieve these, the emphasis is placed on understanding the spatial location of features, their relationships and the processes shaping them over time. Site and situation analysis, including environmental processes and the impact of human activities, are stressed and linked to societal needs, goals, and objectives.
Thus, the understanding, design, implementation, and monitoring of land cover, land uses, plans and policies at all levels are given special consideration and topmost priority in the School.
Each department is moderately equipped to handle its area of specialization with efforts being directed at achieving the overall objectives of a technology-focused institution in the twenty first century. Details on each department are provided in the departmental pages.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
The School of Management and Information Technology was established in 1990 to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in three main departments, namely, the Department of Information Technology, the Department of Management Technology and the Department of Economics and Finance.
However, at the moment, the School operates the Department of Accountancy, Banking & Finance, Economics, Information and Management Technology, and Library and Information Science. The first sets of students were admitted in the 2000/2001 session into five programs as follows;-

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVE
Nigeria is endowed with vast human and natural resources, but one of the problems plaguing its development is the proper harnessing and management of these resources for the common good.
This problem has become more pronounced with the introduction of information and Communication as a major management tool which has revolutionized the way business I s transacted and reduced the World into a global village.
Nigeria needs to build its human capacity to respond to the challenges of the information age if it hopes to be a player in the information and management revolution of the 21st century.
The school of Management and Information Technology was established to address this area of critical need in our national socio-economic development. This school is unique in its orientation and in the courses if offers. It is the first Management School in the Country to offer a degree program in information and communication technology.
It is also the only management school in the country that prepares its students for the challenges of the Information and communication age by building into it Accountancy, Economics, Information and Communication Technology, Management Technology, Banking & Finance, and Library Information & Sciences programs fifty percent information technology-based content.
The main objectives of the school are to train skilled Accountants, Economists, Banking & Finance, Management, Librarian and Information Technology experts who will occupy important positions in public and private sector organizations and function effectively and efficiently in the knowledge-based and Information drove economy of the 21st century.

Profile of school of Life sciences
The formerly School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS) was the oldest School in the University, having been established in 1981 at the inception of the University.
It was then known as School of Sciences with four (4) departments viz: – Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics/Statistics and Physics.
This arrangement existed till June 1984 when the University was merged with the University of Maiduguri and was renamed Modibbo Adama College, Yola.
In 1988, the College was de-merged and subsequently regained its former status and name (Federal University of Technology, Yola). This resuled in the name of the School being changed to the School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE) with the creation of the Department of Technology Education to now make a total of five (5) departments.
The number of departments increased to six during the 1989/90 session when the Department of Geology originally located in the School of Environmental Sciences (SES) was moved to SSTE.
The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology were created in the 1996/97 session. Hitherto, they were programmes in the then Department of Biological Sciences.
In September 1998, the former Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research was split into two, the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science and Statistics and Operations Research bringing the total number of departments in the School to nine.
Furthermore, at the end of the 1998/99 session, the School of Science and Technology Education was split into two – i.e. School of Technology and Science Education (STSE) and School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS).
As a result of this development, the School of Pure and Applied Sciences inherited eight (8) out of the nine (9) departments that existed before the splitting.
During the 2007/2008 session, the Department of Biotechnology was created making a total number of nine (9) departments in the School.

There is no doubt that pure science is the bedrock of all technologies, whether copied, adopted or developed.
Therefore, the mission of the School in the new millennium remains the training of persons in the various disciplines in the School who will acquire scientific and professional skills and who in turn will be professionally competent and contribute to the development of our developing economy.

To help us achieve our goal, the school engages in academic programs and activities as well as workshops and Seminars. All these are made possible by reputable scholars in the areas of Agricultural Technology Education, Industrial Technology Education and Science Education across the four departments with twelve programs and Sandwich programs that train teachers during long vacation periods.
At postgraduates’ level, the school offers postgraduates Diploma in Education (PGDE), postgraduate Diploma in Technology Education (PGDTE) M.Tech in Industrial Technology Education, M.Tech in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics Education, Master of Education in Educational Management, M.Tech Agricultural Technology Education, Ph.D. in Industrial Technology Education, Educational Management, Agricultural Technology Education, Chemistry Education, and Mathematics Education. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOL
The School of Technology and Science Education (STSE) came on board during the 1999/2000 academic year. It was the realization of a dream arising from an apparent need to meet both local and national educational desires in our education system.
Hitherto, our programs had been run under the former School of Science and Technology Education (SSTE) in a single department, known as Department of Technology Education.
With the birth of the new school, STSE programs were run in two departments – Department of Technology Education and Department of Science Education as follows:

The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology were created in the 1996/97 session. Hitherto, they were programs in the then Department of Biological Sciences.
In September 1998, the former Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research was split into two, the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science and Statistics and Operations Research bringing the total number of departments in the School to nine.
Furthermore, at the end of the 1998/99 session, the School of Science and Technology Education was split into two – i.e. School of Technology and Science Education (STSE) and School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS).
As a result of this development, the School of Pure and Applied Sciences inherited eight (8) out of the nine (9) departments that existed before the splitting.
During the 2007/2008 session, the Department of Biotechnology was created making a total number of nine (9) departments in the School.
- PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
There is no doubt that pure science is the bedrock of all technologies, whether copied, adopted or developed. Therefore, the mission of the School in the new millennium remains the training of persons in the various disciplines in the School who will acquire scientific and professional skills and who in turn will be professionally competent and contribute to the development of our developing economy. The skills our graduates will acquire or possess will make them self-reliant, create jobs and provide services rather than depend on government for employment.
Our Vision and Mission statement as a School is contained in the motto of the Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola which is: Technology for Development. Our vision and mission as a School of pure science is to carry through the molecular approach to understanding, to solve problems and make our environment a better, healthier and conducive place to live in.

School of General Studies
The General Studies Programme is intended to widen the horizon of students of all disciplines within the university. While hitherto new university students have been exposed to many subjects during their pre-university studies, their university studies will narrow down to allow this fact be a disadvantage to the ability of the students to face varied and challenging life situations in the future.
It is in fact the hallmark of liberal education.
In line with this noble objective, Modibbo Adama University of Technology has since its inception tried to organize all aspects of the General Studies Programme to ensure optimal advantage to the students. It has constantly been making efforts to improve its facilities and introduce courses that will be of great benefit to its eventual graduates.
The school is successful in organizing Computer Based Test (CBT) all examinations in the School of General Studies are conducted through CBT.
The School of General Studies has an array of highly qualified and dedicated lecturers, advisers and models and is ever ready to offer every necessary help to enable the students to be successful and enriched.
