Studying the Internet: The World Wide Web
The Internet has been around for about 40 years, if it were a man it should have some kids by now.
I try to imagine how it was some 40 years ago, when they heard about something new that came to change how information was shared.
It must have certainly sounded as good news to people from different nations when they heard about this.
Since the Internet was first announced it has become a basic part of the daily routine of many individuals.
Many cannot even stay a day without doing anything that involves the Internet. I may even fall in this category, no matter how stressful my day is, I always want to squeeze some time to check the net.
I decided to start the series Studying the Internet, to share information about the Internet that many do not know about.
It’s better to know how the Internet works, for a better understanding of some of the processes we see.
For today’s article, I’ll like us to look at some misconceptions people have about the Internet. Is the Internet the same as the World Wide Web? What do you think?
The World Wide Web (WWW) is definitely not the same as the internet, this may be surprising to many. A page on a book is not the same as the book itself. The World Wide Web is just like a page on a book, but this time around the book is the internet. According to The Oxford Dictionary,
The internet is a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.
While the World Wide Web is just a way to access the information that is available on the Internet.
The opening page of the World Wide Web was around 1980s, when Tim Berners-Lee started working it.
Big shoutout to Tim :). By 1990s it was already becoming popular, it’s importance is even extended to the 21st century. How many can boast of staying a month without the Internet or even the World Wide Web? My eyes on you haha
The World Wide Web is made up of different technologies. Let’s check out these technologies:
HTML
HTML is an acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. When HTML was originally designed, it only worked with text documents. But after refinement in the 1990s, it functions were enhanced.
It is now able to support website plugins, basic designs and even sheets with styles. The HTML5 is the most recent version, after it seem as if the development was abandoned for many years. The release of HTML5 was suprising.
HTTP
I once heared someone say HTTP is just an alternative to WWW, that is so untrue. HTTP is a technology based on WWW. HTTP is an acronym that means Hypertext Transfer Protocol. After two centuries, the version has been upgraded to the version 2.
Web servers and Web browsers
Web servers are based on HTTP for processing various requests for a user, while a Web browsers are conventional browsers used to access and explore websites.
There are quite a number of popular Web browsers; Google Chrome, Safari Browser and Internet Explorer. Most browsers work for both computers and smartphones.
The World Wide Web evolves everyday, I guess something big will be coming soon.
When it was initially created it was made primarily for desktop and laptop computers, but today even a smartphone can access it in a very small screen.
It has been adjusted to fit many displays, not restricting it for those with computers. Even a smart watch with a Web browser can access the World Wide Web.
Due to security threats over the years, the security of the Web continues to be upgraded.
Also users who share details about themselves online, give information to advertisement agencies that display suitable adverts to them.
Location is not left out, most Ads on the Web is dependent on location. So it is common to see an Ad relating to one’s environment.
When you talk about websites in the Web, the most common domain is the .com domain.
Others include .org for organisations, .biz – a business domain and .io – one of the domains with rapid growth, mainly for tech startups and websites.
That’s the much we can take on the topic “Studying the Internet: The World Wide Web”.
