About Cross River State University Of Science And Technology

The Cross River University of Technology was established in August 2002 by Cross River State Bill No. 9 recently amended as Bill No. 6 of 2004.

The Cross River University of Technology is an outcome of a merger of three former tertiary institutions (The Polytechnic, Calabar, the College of Education, Akamkpa and the Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture, Ovonum, Obubra) owned by the Cross River State Government.

The university is established primarily to provide basic training and research and to impart research skills to equip Nigerians of various backgrounds in all areas of technology.

Emphasis is however placed on catchment areas of the university to enable the exploitation of the enormous natural resources for sustainable development of CrossRiverState. The university is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal.

The Cross River University of Technology began operations in September 2002. After one year of its existence, an in-house assessment was conducted during a visitation exercise.

Emerging problems were identified and addressed. The law establishing the university, Bill No. 9 of 2002 was amended as Bill No. 6 of 2004 and structural reorganization and staff re-designation were effected.

The university began communications with the National Universities Commission (NUC) in February 2004 by submitting a letter of introduction and in May 2004 a letter requesting recognition was also sent to the NUC.

On October 11, 2004, the management of Cross River University of Technology visited the NUC and submitted a formal application for recognition in plenary.

This was followed by a visit on April 15, 2005 by His Excellency Mr. Donald Duke, the then Executive Governor of CrossRiverState and the management of Cross River University of Technology to NUC to confirm readiness of the university to take off.

Subsequently, NUC announced the recognition of Cross River University of Technology with effect from May 13, 2004.

The university in 2004 applied for inclusion in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) brochure and was listed in the JAMB brochure for 2005/2006 session. Academic activities commenced in the university in the 2002/03 academic session and the first set of 347 students graduated on November 18, 2006.

The two main responsibilities of Cross River University of technology are to produce high quality and well-trained graduates and researchers well-equipped for the provision of quality life, food, fiber, and shelter for the people in a sustainable manner, using well researched techniques of Science and Technology. In this regard, no person shall be required to satisfy requirements as to race (including ethnic grouping), sex, place of birth, family origin, religious or political persuasion as a condition of becoming or continuing as a student, the holder of a degree or other awards of the university, or of appointment or employment at the university.

In other words, no person shall be subjected to any disadvantage or accorded any disadvantage in relation to the university.

This however does not prevent the university from imposing any disability or restriction on any person, where such a person willfully refuses or fails on grounds of religious belief or similar grounds to undertake duty generally and uniformly imposed on all persons or any group of them and which in the opinion of the university is reasonably justified in the national and State interest.

Admission Requirements To Study In CRUTECH

Class Rooms and Lecture Halls

No department in the Faculty has a class room and/or a lecture hall for itself. Lectures and all other academic activities are at present being conducted in the Workshops cum Laboratories and common university lecture theatres.

Staff Offices

Eighty percent of members of the academic staff have no personal office spaces. These include both regular (permanent and contract) and adjunct members of staff. Invariably, the lecturers operate from their cars; jumping from the car to the classroom and back into the car, with no place to stay and consult with students.

The Faculty of Engineering has the following departments, namely:

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science was one of the founding Faculties in Cross River University of Technology. It is at present made up of five Departments, namely, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemical Sciences, Department of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics/Statistics, and Department of Physics. The Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematics/Statistics each runs two separate B.Sc. programmes which are Biology and Microbiology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics respectively.

Promotion

Some members of staff were promoted to the position of Professors and Associate Professors in the 2012 and 2013 Assessment years.

Accreditation

Two programmes in the Faculty of Science were granted full accreditation status by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The remaining progrmmes are awaiting a reaccreditation visit by the NUC. These are: B.Sc. Biology, B.Sc Microbiology, B.Sc. Biochemistry, B.Sc. Chemistry, B.Sc. Statistics and B.ScMathematics.

Students Enrolment and Graduation

There has been a considerable increase on student intake from an initial enrolment of 300 and 200 to about 2500 in 2013. The Faculty has also witnessed a significant progression from barely 100 on the graduation list in 2006 to about 1000 in 2013.

Postgraduate Progrmmes in the Faculty

Three Departments commenced Postgraduate programmes which will lead to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philiosophy degrees in Parasitology, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Microbiology, Physics, and Mathematics.

Staff Development

Some members of the academic staff completed their PhD programmesduring the period under consideration. They include Dr. Fur Mfongeh (Microbiology), Dr. Raymond Ajang (Parasitology), Dr. Lawrence Etim (Microbiology), Dr. Kingsley Enyi-idoh (Microbiology) Dr. Anthony Egbe (Botany) and Dr. IgweEwona (Physics). Dr. Emmanuel Ettah Physics. Others are at the verge of completing their Ph.Dprogrammes.

Notable Achievements

Students of the Department of Mathematics/Statistics who entered fortheMathematics Olympiad competition at Abuja came out second in their category. Management of the University has acknowledged this great achievement.

Projects

The Faculty benefitted from the present drive of the current Vice Chancellor to build new structures in the University. There is now a Faculty of Science complex undergoing construction and will soon be completed. This will accommodate more class rooms, Laboratories, Staff offices to augment the existing ones. This Faculty complex is situated opposite the Works Department.

History of the Faculty

Background

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences of the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) is one of the academic units that CRUTECH inherited from erstwhile The Polytechnic Calabar, following the extinguishment of the polytechnic by the law that set up CRUTECH in 2002. At the polytechnic level the previous academic unit (the School Of Environmental Studies) hosted some of the pioneer programmes with which the erstwhile institution commenced operation in 1973. At the inception of CRUTECH in 2002, it also became the destiny of the faculty to host a number of the pioneer programmes of the university, namely: (i) architecture, (ii) estate management, (iii) urban and regional planning, (iv) visual arts and technology. Thus, in essence, the faculty has a long-standing tradition of training people into the professional cadres of the various academic disciplines that constitute the building industry as well as the body of knowledge that is known as environmental science and technology.

Current Academic Programmes

Over the last 13 years, the faculty has grown and matured far beyond the scope and structure of the academic unit that was inherited from the polytechnic in 2002. Today the faculty hosts four academic programmes at the bachelor’s degree level, namely:
(i) Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in Architecture;
(ii) Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in Estate Management,
(iii) Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree in Urban and Regional Planning,
(iv) Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Visual Arts and Technology.

At the post graduate level, the faculty offers five academic programmes at the post-graduate diploma (PGD) level, namely:
(i) Post-graduate Diploma in Architecture,
(ii) Post-graduate Diploma in Estate Management,
(iii) Post-graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning,
(iv) Post-graduate Diploma in Landscape Planning Technology,
(v) Post-graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Technology.

At the master’s degree level, the faculty presently offers two academic programmes, namely:
(i) Master of Technology (MTech) degree in Architecture,

Faculty of Management Sciences

Our Mission

Our mission is to produce well-trained graduates in core management sciences. (that is Accountancy and Business Administration) who will be well-equipped for active participation in the socio-economic development of the state and Nigeria at large. As Cross River State is blazing the trail in tourism and culture, the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is established to address the needed manpower to serve the state and country in general.
The Faculty academic programmes have been developed on the assumption that in our developing economy, organizations of all types (big or small. Profit or non-profit making) face challenges from the complexity and dynamics socio-economics environment.

Vision

The faculty is established to be a centre of excellence for teaching, learning, research and the provision of community services in the areas of Accountancy and Business Management.

Philosophy

The general philosophy of the faculty academic programme is to create an atmosphere in which optimal students’ development can be achieved in both business and accounting contexts. This prepares the graduates to take responsibility in industrial, commercial, public and private sector of the economy.

Policy Issues

The programmes are designed to offer students in the faculty the opportunity to become business administrator, financial and human resource managers in public and private organizations. The students will also be effectively and efficiently utilized to harness available resources and take decisions on the problem of the organizations and their environment.

The Polytechnic Calabar: College of Education, Awi: and IBB College of Agriculture, Obubra, are three tertiary institution that were merge t create Cross River University of Technology through Cross River Executive Bill No. 6 of 2004.

This led to establishment of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Ogoja, in 2002, with the Department of Business Administration and Accountancy. Currently, the Faculty has three degree programmes as follows: B.Sc. Accountancy: B.Sc Business Administration: and B.Sc Hospitality and Tourism Management.

These Departments offer four year degree programmes. The student population for 2014/2015 is for Accountancy, Business Administration and Hospitality and Tourism, as admission is through JAMB.

Business Administration

Recently, the Department of Business Administration best graduating student in 2010 academics session Mr. Micheal Ushie, a First Class Hons. Degree holder came back from Leeds University in UK with a Master Degree. He has been employed into the main stream of the University and deployed to the Department of Business Administration.
In the area of staff development, the Head of Department Dr. Sunday Ewah attended two international conferences in London and New Orleans USA between 2013 and 2014 where he presented three stimulated papers. The academics staff in the department have really benefitted from the funds provided by TET fund, by accessing such funds and using the funds to attend local and international conferences in the past four years. This has improved and enhanced their performance within the work environment and beyond.

Accountancy Department

Staff from the Department of Accountancy also benefitted from the TET fund in the area of local and international conferences attendance.

The Department of Hospitality and Tourism

The Department has just completed their 2015 field trip within the state. During the previous year, the trip took a student of Hospitality and Tourism outside the state.

History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Okuku Campus, was established as a faculty of Cross River University of Technology in 2007. At inception, it was called Faculty of Health Sciences and was commissioned in May 2007 by the then governor, Mr. Donald Duke.

The Faculty was renamed Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in 2009 by the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. E. Efiom Ene-Obong, with the admission of the first batch of students. The Faculty was conceived as a nucleus of an eventual full-fledged College of Medicine.

The Faculty at present has three academic departments, namely, Department of Medical Physiology, Department of Human Anatomy, and Department of Medical Biochemistry.

Since the commencement of academic programmes from 2009, the Faculty has experienced tremendous development in the area of staffing, student population, and infrastructures.

• The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences has the following Departments, each mandated by law to award specific certificates:

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry was established in September, 2002 with the assets of the defunct Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture, Obubra.

The idea of establishing a Faculty of Agriculture dates back to 2002, when the three tertiary institutions in the state (Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture, Obubra; Cross River State College of Education, Akamkpa, and The Polythecnic Calabar) were transformed to the present Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH).

At inception in 2002, there were five departments as follows: Department of Agricultural Economics and Management; Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development; Department of Animal Science and Fisheries; Department of Crop Science; Department of Soil Science and the Department of Forestry and Wildlife.

In 2004, the departments of Crop and Soil Sciences were reorganized and renamed Department of Agronomy, while the Department of Agricultural Economics and Management and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development were also reorganized and renamed Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension.

In 2005, following the recommendations of the National Universities Commission (NUC) visitation team to the Faculty, the Department of Fisheries was created out of the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries and started fully as an autonomous department in 2007.
In 2009, the Department of Fisheries was renamed Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science.
The Faculty currently offers the following degree programmes:

Department Degree Option

1. Agricultural Economics & Extension: B. Agric. (Hons) in Agric. Econs & Extension.
2. Agronomy: B. Agric. (Hons) in Agronomy.
3. Animal Science: B. Agric. (Hons) in Animal Science.
4. Fisheries and Aquatic Science: B.Fisheries(Hons)Fisheries/ Aquatic Science.
5. Forestry and Wildlife: B. Forestry (Hons.) in Forestry and Wildlife.

All Bachelors degree programmes in the Faculty are of a five – year duration. The programmes are designed to provide broad-based practical and theoretical training in basic agricultural sciences for the first three years and a full year’s practical training in approved farms and other agro-based establishments during the fourth year. In the fifth and final year, the student is given intensive course work and an individual research project.

Postgraduate courses leading to the degrees of M. Sc. & Ph. D, as well as the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) were introduced in the various departments in the Faculty in 2010.

The goal of the Faculty is to be recognized, active and better known for excellence.

While the vision of the Faculty is to be an internationally recognized research and training centre that enjoys a solid reputation for its scientific expertise and regarded as an attractive cooperation partner.
