The way respect is shown to the elders

The way an African will show respect is quite different from the way it is show in other continents. The elders are highly regarded in the community and viewed with high esteem.

They are more respected than any other set of people living in a community. This is because the elders are the ones who passes these cultures from generation to generation.

They are the pillars of the different communities, so everyone rely on them. When in an occasion where many people come together as a group, the opinions of the elders supersedes that of everyone else present.

When it comes to the serving of food too, they are served first before everyone too. Generally, they make choices before everyone.

Pointing at someone

In most African cultures it is usually viewed as a rude behaviour when you try to show someone another person by moving your finger.

Because of this when you see most Africans talking about someone they try to use facial movements or stylishly point at someone without the person noticing.

I still remember what happened some years ago, when a friend was talking about a man’s hat and subconsciously pointed at it, he got the insult of his life that day. I’m so sure he wouldn’t make such a mistake again.

Most Africans, especially mature ones do not like younger ones pointing at them.

Collecting/Giving an item

Most Africans view that the right hand is superior to the left. So when you give an elderly person an item with the left hand they feel offended.

They prefer to receive items with either the right hand or with both hands. This is not a problem within peers, since people in the same age group do not really care about this.

Method of greeting

Africans value and show respect so much. The easiest way to notice this is observing the way they greet. A young person can greet an elderly person up to ten times a day, depending on how many times he sees the elderly person.

In some cultures, the younger person has to lie down or squat. This is a very fine way to make a good first impression when in front of an elderly person.

The greetings is usually a two way thing, but it shows respect when it is initiated by the younger person. People within same age group can use normal “Hey” and “Hi”.

But when greeting an elderly person it is usually according to time, good (morning, afternoon or evening). If you want to make a good impression before an old African man or woman in your neighbourhood, just try greeting him or her.
