The Next Generation STEM Internship Program (NEXTGENS) affords rising juniors and seniors from high schools in Anderson, Blount, Knox, Loudon and Roane counties the opportunity to participate in STEM or STEM-related projects with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Eligibility:
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident at the time of application
- Be a rising junior or senior and in good standing at an accredited high school in Anderson, Blount, Knox, Roane or Loudon county
- Be at least 16 years of age by the time of appointment
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Provide proof of health insurance coverage
- Complete a Zintellect application and acquire recommendations from a current teacher and principal

- $400 per week stipend based on 40 hours of participation each week

Internship Description:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest multi-program science and energy laboratory, with scientific and technical capabilities spanning the continuum from basic to applied research. As an educational participant, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a world-class research facility that will directly benefit your career goals.

Selected applicants will participate beginning June 3 through July 26. Students are expected to participate 40 hours per week. A maximum of five days (without stipend) may be missed during the appointment period, if necessary, for other commitments.

- Complete an online application and obtain two recommendations from a STEM teacher and principal through the Zintellect application system
- Obtain two recommendations, through the Zintellect application system, from a STEM teacher and principal
- Complete pre- and post-appointment surveys
- Behave in a responsible and professional manner
- Avoid activities that interfere with the appointment period
- Complete a report at the end of the appointment – rubric will be provided.
Electronic applications, including two submitted recommendations, must be submitted through the Zintellect application system.
