About Benue State University Markurdi (BSUM).

List Of Courses Offered In Benue State University (BSUM)

Popularly known and referred to as BSUM is Benue State University with the motto “Scientia Liberatio Populorum“.

The university which has it’s current vice chancellor as Professor Msugh Moses Kembe has over 35,000 students.

Benue State University was established by the Benue State Government with the enactment of the Benue State University Edict No. 1 of 1991. The University took off in the 1992/93 academic year with four faculties, namely, Arts, Education, Science and Social Sciences. Two Faculties, Law and Management Sciences came on stream in the 1993/94 academic year.

A post graduate school took off in the 1998/1999 academic year while the College of Health Sciences was established in the 2003/2004 academic session.

The University took off Nineteen years ago during the tenure of Late Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu as Executive Governor of Benue State. Adasu, therefore became the first Visitor of the University

Admission Requirements To Study In BSUM

The following are the admission requirements to study at Benue State University.

Therefore the candidate must;

  • be at least 16 years of age as at the time of applying to BSUM.
  • have at least 5 credit passes in SSCE or its equivalent in not more than two sittings.
  • get an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary matriculation Board Examination
  • have a reasonable average in when the JAMB result and Screening results are combined.
      1. i. Cut-off mark of 180 UTME points and above for candidates who applied for degree Programmes in the Faculties of Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, Science, Management Sciences and Social Sciences;
    1. ii. Cut-off mark of 200 UTME points and above for candidates who applied for MB.BS and Law Programme in the College of Health Sciences and Faculty of Law.

    2.       Senate further approved the following Post-UTME screening pass mark for each Faculty/College:

    1. i. Faculty of Arts                              –     40%
    2. ii. College of Health Sciences                   –     50%
    3. iii. Faculty of Education                         –     40%
    4. iv. Faculty of Environmental Sciences            –     40%
    5. v. Faculty of Law                               –     50%
    6. vi. Faculty of Management Sciences               –     40%
    7. vii. Faculty of Science                           –     40%
    8. viii. Faculty of Social Sciences                   –     40%

    3. Other approved registration and screening guidelines for undergraduate Programmes of the University are:

    1. i. Candidates Must present their original academic qualifications and certificates of State of Origin, Birth certificates/Age Declaration, Marriage certificates/Declaration, where applicable for screening before registration.

    Note: The University WILL NOT entertain cases of change of name.

    1. ii. UTME candidates must in addition to 3(i) above present their original UTME result slip for screening. The minimum acceptable UTME score is 180 and above, except for MB.BS and Law which is 200 or as otherwise directed by the Vice-Chancellor/Chairman, Central Admissions Committee. On-line UTME slips will not be acceptable for screening/registration. Any candidate who up to the point of screening/registration has not received his/her JAMB slip with embossed photograph has to go to JAMB and obtain same, provided he/she does this within the stipulated time.
    1. iii. The following shall qualify for registration into 200 level provided they meet the ‘O’ level requirements as specified in the general entry requirements by JAMB and departmental requirements.

    a)       NCE holders from recognized institutions with 9 points and above;
    b)       IJMB holders from recognized institutions with 6 points and above;

    1. iv. Diploma holders from recognized institutions passed at upper credit level plus 5 ‘O’ level credits obtained at a sitting. Candidates with lower credit may be considered for registration provided they meet ‘O’ Level requirements.

    No subject shall be counted at both ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level in both cases listed in (3a-b);

    In addition to (3 and 4 above), only DE candidates whose names are in the JAMB printout will be registered. (The copy of the printout is available at the Academic office for copying)

    1. v. Candidates must combine not more than two sittings to qualify for registration in all cases.
    1. vi. ADPM, ADHM and Registered Nursing Certificates are not acceptable qualification for entry into undergraduate programmes of the University.
    1. 4. GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    In addition to the entry requirements specific to individual faculties or departments, the following are the general entry requirements approved for admission to the first degree programmes of the University by JAMB.

    1. a. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME)

    Applicants must write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and attain an acceptable score in the use of English and three other subjects relevant to the proposed course of study.

    Prior to sitting for the UTME, applicants should have attained the age of 16. For a candidate who has attained the acceptable standard in the UTME to be registered for a course in the University he/she must obtain:

    Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (SSCE/GCE ‘O’ Level) or equivalent with Credits in five (5) subjects relevant to the courses and obtained at not more than two sittings.

    1. b. Direct Entry (DE)

    Applicant with one of the following qualifications may be considered for admission by Direct Entry:

      1. i. A minimum of five (5) subjects passed at not more than two sittings with at least two at the principal or advanced level of the GCE and the others, at credit level of the SSCE/GCE O/Level. No subject shall be counted at both Ordinary and Advanced levels.
      1. ii. Passes in two major subjects at the NCE with SSCE O/level credits or equivalents in THREE other subjects (mainly for Education Courses). Education may be accepted as a third A/level subject for those taking courses in Education.
      1. iii. A maximum of two passes at the IJMB examination or Cambridge moderated School of Basic Studies terminal examination or International Baccalaureate from recognized institutions with SSCE/GCE O/Level credits or equivalent in three other subjects (SUBJCET TO UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS).
    1. 5. SPECIFIC DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
    2. i. A Credit in English is required for all courses;
    3. ii. A Credit in Mathematics is required for all Science based courses, Management Sciences, Economics and Geography;
    4. iii. A Pass in Mathematics is required for all Social Sciences and non-Science Education courses. Psychology requires at least a Credit Pass in Biology or Health Sciences;
    5. iv. ‘O’ Level Credit pass in Economics is required for Business Education, all Management Sciences courses and Economics;
    6. v. A Credit pass in ‘O’ level Literature is required for B.A. English, Linguistics, Theatre Arts and Law While a pass in Literature is required for B.A. (Ed) English.
    7. vi. IJMB ‘O’ Level Credit Pass in Mathematics and English are acceptable in lieu of credit pass at SSCE or GCE ‘O’ level English;
    8. vii. NCE English major is acceptable in lieu of ‘O’ Level Literature.
    9. viii. NCE use of English is acceptable in lieu of ‘O’ level Credit pass in SSCE or GCE ‘O’ level English. In all cases, ‘A’ Level Passes Supersedes ‘O’ Level passes.

    6. UTME SUBJECT COMBINATION:

    (A)      FACULTY OF ARTS
    i)        Department of Theatre Arts
    B.A. Theatre Arts
    Literature in English and two other relevant subjects.

    ii)        Department of English
    B.A. English
    Literature in English and any two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.

    iii)       Department of Languages and Linguistics

    • B.A. Linguistics

    Literature in English and any two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.

    • B.A. French

    French and any other two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.

    • Department of History

    B.A. History
    History/Government and any other two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences.

    • Department of Religion and Philosophy
    • B.A. Religious Studies

    Any three subjects. (For purposes of registration, ‘O’ level credit pass in Christian Religious Studies is required).

    • B.A. Philosophy

    Any three subjects.

    (iii)      Candidates who applied to other Universities must tender their application receipts and JAMB slips with embossed passports photographs before registration.
    (iv)      Ensure to register only qualified candidates. Consult the Registrar or the Academic Officer for clarification where you are in doubt.
