The main purpose of the fellowships is to distil the key findings from the PhD thesis and to consider how best to communicate with the main audiences using written, visual and oral presentation, including traditional publication forms as well as social media. However, we are not seeking to support applications that are sole to turn the thesis into an academic paper for a journal.

The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) aims to Produce high quality, internationally recognised research in relation to crime and criminal justice; Advance understanding of crime and criminal justice through theoretical, empirical and applied research.

Scholarship Description

  • Applications Deadline: September
  • Course Level: These are short-term fellowships available for PhD students.
  • Study Subject: These are short-term fellowships to PhD students in Scotland to turn their thesis into research summaries and associated materials for policymakers and practitioners.
  • ScholarshipAward: The funding for the fellowships will be for £3,000. This can be either a full time or part time commitment, but they must be completed within 6 months of commencement. In addition to the £3,000 the Fellowships involve:
    1. A writers retreat/workshop to develop skills in writing for a policy or practice audience
    2. A session with Scottish Government policymakers and analysts on why, how and when they need evidence and what they find most useful
    3. Mentoring, support and hosting (computer and library access) from one of the member universities of SCCJR or SIPR, the academic partners of this initiative
    4. Comments on summary/outputs from SG partner in the policy area of interest
    5. Publication of outputs by SCCJR as part of a Fellowship series, with cross-publication of policing relevant projects on the SIPR website
    6. The opportunity to present your work at a mini-conference in spring with other successful applicants

These fellowships will be available from autumn 2019 and would be for those recently completed (within 2 years), or nearing completion (within three months to submission) of a PhD. Students at all Scottish Universities are eligible to apply.

How to Apply: Applicants should set out in a maximum of two sides of A4:

    • The theme and key questions of your PhD and some emerging key findings
    • The potential audiences for your work across policy and practice
    • A provisional description of the likely nature and number of outputs, for example, briefing/research highlights papers, practice toolkit, visual display of information, social media content.
