The MCO Graduate Training Program offers a 10-week summer internship to well-qualified undergraduates who are considering Ph.D. careers in the life sciences. The program is funded by GSAS, Harvard Molecules, Cells, and Organisms, Harvard Evolution, Ecology, and Environment, and the Leadership Alliance.

Each summer well-qualified interns are placed in MCO faculty labs and take part in current research projects, attend weekly faculty lectures, work with current MCO graduate students as peer mentors, and take part in joint field trips with other Harvard summer programs.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private college or university in the United States or its territories, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• currently-enrolled undergraduates who are considering Ph.D. careers in the humanities, social sciences, and life/physical sciences and who have already had at least one upper-level course in their field of study. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.
• Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
• Demonstrate a committed interest to pursue graduate study toward a PhD or MD-PhD.
• Have completed at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining of their undergraduate education by the start of the summer program.
• Be a documented U.S. citizen or non-citizen national or permanent resident in possession of an alien registration receipt card (I-551) or other legal document of such status at the time of application. International citizens studying in the United States with an F-1 Visa are not eligible for the SR-EIP. Individuals seeking asylum or refugees are not eligible.
• Note: The SR-EIP is not designed for students pursuing professional training for careers in the practice of law, business administration, clinical medicine, clinical psychology or the allied health professions.
• Note:If you attend a U.S. institution but do not meet the citizenship eligibility requirements for the SR-EIP, contact individual summer program coordinators at Research Sites to learn about other opportunities for participation in summer research.

• The program covers travel to and from the program, housing, and typically a stipend of $3,500 and a food allowance of $1,500.
• Students participating in MARC or similar programs that provide summer support are welcome to apply.

• The program will provide all research and course related expenses, room and board, travel to and from the program, as well as a stipend (unless otherwise covered by the student’s external research funding.)

Internship Description

During our 10-week program, interns work in the labs of MCO faculty members, participate in a wide-variety of scientific and enriching personal experiences, all culminating in an end of summer poster session and reception, where the interns present their work to faculty and peers.

Students in the program will live in Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village housing for 10 weeks. SROH interns are placed in faculty labs in Cambridge spanning fields in the life and physical sciences, or one-on-one with faculty in the humanities and social sciences. Program activities include weekly professional development seminars, preparation of oral and/or poster presentations, and attendance at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium, and field trips with Harvard graduate student mentors.
