World’s leading institute for international people exchange and ideas, Institute of International Education(IIE) has recently announced new generation study abroad scholarships to double the number of US students studying abroad

IIE’s $400K scholarship fund will really help the campuses diversify who studies abroad.

The scholarship will be awarded to 160 deserving students to study abroad under IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative.

It has been recorded that less than 10% of US students from American colleges move abroad every year for higher studies. To increase the number of study abroad students IIE is taking initiative to allow more US students to study abroad with its Generation Study Abroad Initiative.

The scholarship primarily targets those students who are typically underrepresented in USA study aboard program.

It is like an encouragement for the underrepresented students and it allows them to participate in an academic, internship and service-learning experience in foreign countries, the officials confirmed.

The authorities have also revealed that 26 universities and colleges from America will receive $7,500 funding by IIE and its partner organizations.

The universities and colleges will use the funds to provide grants and scholarships of $2,500 to at least 6 students each.

The universities and colleges that applied to take part in this scholarship program were basically chosen according to their progress and commitment towards the Generation Study Abroad Initiative to double the number of outbound students.

The universities and colleges that share the same goal as IIE to promote diversity in education abroad include some of the winning campuses, minority serving institutions, community colleges and historically black colleges.

IIE CEO and President, Allan Goodman said, “The IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarships will give more students – and more underrepresented students – the opportunity to gain international experience, which is one of the most important components of a 21st-century education”.

The Generation Study Abroad by IIE is a 5 year initiative that is designed to mobilize the commitments and resources, while achieving the goal to double the number of students that are underrepresented in USA for study aboard program by the end of the decade.

There are 26 recipient institutions, of which 16 will receive the funds for study aboard in any foreign country and it is backed by STA Travel, IIE and individual donors.

The scholarship fund in the remaining 10 institutes is actually designated as Ireland-IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarship funds so as to aid study abroad in Ireland and it is backed by Irish government.

In February 2015, The Irish Ministry for Education and Skills has joined the Generation Study Abroad Initiative as the leader partner and contributed $100,000 in this initiative of IIE.

The grants awarded to students can be used to cover tuition fees and other relevant costs related to study abroad like, travel, books, internships and serving learning abroad between summer 2015 and spring 2016.

The initiative by IIE recorded over 630 commitment partners till date, which include governments, associations, education institutions and other organizations that have taken initiatives to boost the number of US students travelling abroad for higher studies every year.

These organizations have participated in the Generation Study Abroad initiative with a hope to double the number of outbound students from 300,000 to 600,000 by the end of the decade.
